Riding a cable car over the Golden Horn

There are 2 8-person cars.

The famous Pierre Loti cafe in Eyüp has one of the finest views of the Golden Horn. The cafe is named after a French writer who became a regular at the coffeehouse when he lived in Eyüp in 1876 and is a popular favourite with Turks and tourists alike. Two years ago, a second cafe-restaurant opened next door, and has proven just as popular. Most people make their way to Pierre Loti through the atmospheric Eyüp cemetery, which boasts beautiful Ottoman tombstones and a stunning view. Those who are daunted by the steep climb drive, but there are few parking spaces at the cafe. However, visitors to Eyüp now have a third option: they can take the new cable car!

The Eyup Pierre Loti line
The cable car was commissioned by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and constructed by Timsan A.S. There are two stops on the line, one on the shore of the Golden Horn and the other in front of the Pierre Loti cafe. Visitors can park their cars at the Golden Horn stop and then take the cable car up to Pierre Loti. The journey takes two minutes. The Golden Horn station measures 625m2 and the Pierre Loti station 250m2. The stops are 419 metres apart and the highest point is 67m2 high. The staircases, control rooms, terraces and waiting rooms are decorated with tiles depicting engravings and miniatures to reflect Eyüp's history. Istanbul has one other cable car that runs across the Macka valley, and the municipality plans to construct more. There are two cabins, each of which carries 8 people. The cable car can carry up to 350 people an hour. The fare has not yet been established. Enjoy a bird's eye view of the Golden Horn followed by a leisurely glass of tea over a good book or a newspaper at the Pierre Loti cafe.
