As the wind built rapidly from 13 knots at the start to 26 knots, ''the breeze was getting into the 30 knot range and these boats are a serious handful over 25,'' said Perini. He was happy and relieved to have come through the race unscathed. ''It's a real buzz sailing downwind in that stuff. Getting the boats up and sizzling in those waves is really good. But the gybes are a bit scary - I'm sure every owner would say the same thing''.
Vincenzo Onorato, owner of Mascalzone Latino, described today as ''the best race of the year'', after recovering from a restart to score fourth.
