My dear friends,
I have some wonderful news to share with you! From September 2-5, Foca hosted the 4th Rastgele (Godspeed) Fisherman and Sea Documentary Films Festival. The festival was organised by the Municipality of Foca, the Underwater Research Society, the Association of Documentary Filmmakers in Turkey, the Foca Local Agenda 21, the Foca Water Resources Association and the Foca Yacht Club. My friends at AFAG had a stand at the festival, which began with a concert by Bulutsuzluk Ozlemi. The documentary films were screened in the evening. During the day, attendees learned how to repair fishing nets, bait fishing rods and catch fish. There were also boat and sailboat races and amateur fishing competitions. Sofia Trincao painted a fisherman's boat in the Portuguese style. My Greek friends at the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (MOm), the Mayor of Alonissos and two Greek fishermen also attended the festival. A panel of Turkish and Greek conservationists, fishermen and mayors came together to discuss the future of us Mediterranean monk seals. AFAG Coordinator Cem Orkun Kirac gave a seminar on the occasion of the efforts made to protect the seal population over the past 40 years. All of my friends from the AFAG attended the festival.
