Trends in 2004

Everything changes so quickly in the automotive sector that sometimes it's hard to keep up with all the new models, trends and strategies. 10 years ago, only the top players in the field were involved in the production of SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles or next generation off-road vehicles). Today, manufactures of all shapes and sizes are trying to get in on the game. In addition, the manufacturers of medium-sized and large off-road vehicles are creating powerful models featuring more hi-tech and luxury details in an effort to maintain their share of the market. As a result, the off-road market is undergoing rapid and exciting new developments.

The new Grand Cherokee
The Grand Cherokee was given a complete makeover back in 1999. It played an important role in the market as the flagship of the Jeep line. However, as the number and power of Jeep's competitors increased, Jeep's engineers were forced to create a new model. The third generation Grand Cherokee was launched at the New York Motor Show and will be available in the North American market in the fall. It promises to continue to be the ace in Jeep's off-road hand.

The first thing you notice about the new Grand Cherokee is that is has harder lines and squarer edges. Other than that, it bears many similarities to the second-generation model. The most radical changes have been made to the rear section of the model, which featured the most feminine design in the second generation Grand Cherokee. The third generation Grand Cherokee is much more masculine.

The third generation Land Rover
Land Rover's third generation Discovery model also promises to be a big hit in 2004. The British company is now a part of Ford and the new Discovery is a clear sign of Ford's commitment to the off-road market. The new SUV features radical changes both in terms of technology and design. The new Discovery was designed by the company's chief designer, Geoff Uppex, and bears a striking resemblance to its big brother, the Range Rover. The new Discovery features large mudguards, harder lines and a raised section in the roof to accommodate the heads of passengers seated in the third row of seats situated in the boot of the car.
Up until only a few years ago, Saab offered a rather limited range of classes and models. After joining forces with GM, the Swedish company has set sail for new horizons. Saab's first SUV is a shining result of this new partnership. The SUV features Saab's classic three-section grille while the headlights have been designed to suit the hard lines of the front design.

Helpful Hints
Hummer is a well-known and important name in the world of off-road vehicles. It has recently hinted that it is currently developing a concept model called the H3 T based on the H2 model that is so popular in Turkey. The H3 T will feature dimensions of more than 5 metres as well as practical luggage space.
