American invasion at the Detroit Auto Show

The new Corvette.

The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit was the first truly global auto show of 2004. Over 40 automobile manufacturers as well as many representatives from industries related to the automotive sector took part. The show was filled with exciting innovations. It was held in a 180.000m2 space and attracted nearly one million visitors. As was the case last year, American automobile manufacturers enjoyed the privilege of being on 'home ground', always staying one step ahead of their European and Asian competitors.

The all new Mustang
One such American manufacturer is Ford, which maintains its rank as the second largest manufacturer in the world. Ford launched the production model of the new generation Mustang whose design concept was shown at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. The first Mustang was launched some 40 years ago and over 8 million Mustangs have been sold. The latest model in this long series is the result of the most comprehensive research and development process that the Mustang has seen since 1979. The production model bore many similarities to the concept version. The Mustang has two powerful engines including a 200-HP 4.0-liter V6 engine plus a 300-horsepower 4.6-liter engine. All Mustangs will come with a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard. For the first time, Ford will also offer a 5 speed automatic gearbox on request.

European manufacturers also made an impact.
Unforgettable Dodge
Dodge, a DaimlerChrysler company, launched the Sling Shot, a concept car developed on the same platform as the Smart roadster and roadster coupe. Whether the Sling Shot will become a production model or not will be decided in part due to the reaction it received at the Detroit Auto Show. Its canvas roof panel can be folded and stored in the boot. Sling Shot features a rear-mounted, 3-cylinder, gasoline engine that is tuned to deliver 100 bhp, four-wheel independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a five-speed gearbox.

The stunning roadster and Corvette
Pontiac, a General Motors company, launched two important production models. The Solstice Roadster will be on the market in the autumn of 2005. The Solstice has a lot in common with the concept version shown in 2002 including a metal grill, strong headlights and oval fog lights.

The launch of the eagerly awaited 6th generation of the legendary Corvette model was attended by some 2000 invited guests as well as members of the press. With its 400HP motor, this is the most powerful Corvette in history.
