From Kırklareli to the world
As befits a percussionist, Burhan Ocal can't keep still. Not surprisingly, his thin frame doesn't seem to have an ounce of fat on it. But this fire in his belly has brought him from his humble beginnings in Kırklareli to a place on the world stage. At the age of 24, he went to Sweden and stayed there for 15 years. He has played with the Kronos Quartet and Sting, as well as with the Zurich and Cologne Philharmonic Orchestras. For his latest project, "Kirklareli İl Siniri", Ocal scoured the kahves of Kırklareli for the best 11 musicians. The result was "Burhan Ocal & Trakya All Stars". The album consists of ancient tunes. Ocal says that his aim is to repay his debt to Kirklareli and to introduce its music to the world.

King of everything
"Even if I'd stayed in Turkey, I'd have been the best at whatever I did. I'd have been a mafia boss or the king of the shoe shiners."

They call me the drummer
"I play a lot of Western instruments, but I am foremost a drummer. I fly all over the world to beat my drum and people line up to hear me play. I have a lot of charisma and I light up the stage. I owe this to Kırklareli. Even in my mother's womb, I knew that I would be a drummer. I actually get paid to travel the world and do what I love."

I am just beginning.
"You can't beat this new album. But I still say that I am just beginning. Once I create the sound I want, it will last a thousand years. I have total confidence in myself. For 26 years, I have spoken 2, 3 languages. But I never show off about it. It is my music that speaks for itself."

Be inspired by me
"To be universal, you must first be local. You can't reject your past. Millions of dollars have been spent on me. My experience and potential make me worthy of this. But I don't pass judgement on others."

I like to dress well
"I like the music and cars of the '50s. I have a '55 Chevrolet, a '49 Dodge and a '64 Mustang. I love Dolce&Gabbana and Prada. Since Zurich is filled with rich people, the best clothes come there first. The shopkeepers always set these aside for me. I wear white and I eat well--vegetables, fruit, green tea and pumpkin seeds."

I am in love
For the past couple of months, I have been seeing a very young and beautiful girl. If she understand and accepts my lifestyle I'd like to get married and have kids.
