Ayhan Sicimoğlu on Cuba
Renowned percussionist Ayhan Sicimoğlu played drums while studying at Tarsus American College. He was drawn to the ''rhythm, time, harmony, heartbeat and life'' of percussion. Today, he is known for his radio shows, rhythm classes and 'Renkler' TV show broadcast on CNN Türk. Sicimoğlu describes Cuba is a kind of Mecca, and shares some helpful hints with our readers.

Where do you enjoying travelling the most?
I've been to Cuba 6 times. The last two times I took 10-15 of my friends with me. My favourite things about the country are its music, drums and dancing.

What are your favourite places to visit?
Take a walk around Habana Vieja (Old Havana) in the evening. With its long, sandy beach and shacks where you can buy lobster and grilled fish, the Playa del Este (Eastern beach) is Havana's Copacabana. Make sure to rent a car-it makes all the difference. Enjoy a concert at the botanical garden (Jardino Botanico) in Havana. Visit Havana's Cementerio Cristobal Colon, the most beautiful cemetery in the Latin world. Trinidad is a lovely village. If possible, try to visit the southern coast and spend a night there. Nature lovers should visit the Pınar Del Rio where the tobacco used to make Cuban cigars is grown.

What are your favourite restaurants and which dishes would you recommend from the menu?
Cuba has few good eateries. Avoid the hotel restaurants. Either eat at the family-run restaurants (Paladar) or at one of the rare tourist venues. My favourite is El Ajibe, a chicken restaurant. Ave. 7ma e/24 y 26 Tel: 204 15 84, 204 15 83.A good paladar is La Cocina de Lilliam Calle 48, No: 1311 e/13 y 15 Tel: 209 65 14. Paladar Hostal Dona Carmela is a bit out of the way, but worth it. Comunidad n° 1 casa10. El Morro. La Habana, Tel: (7) 8636048.

What do you recommend people should do in the evening?
Cuba's nightlife gets started during the day. I never miss the Callejón de Hamel (Camel Alley) a street party held every Sunday since it was established in the 1990 by a group of industrialists from Havana. Every Sunday afternoon Havana's most famous 'Rumberos' put on rumba performances here. Latin Jazz lovers can enjoy music and a bit to eat at Jazz Cafe. Tel: (7) 553170. Lo Zorra y El Cuervo (The Vixen and the Crow) is a paradise for jazz fans. Tel: (7) 662402. Casa de la Musica de Miramar Hala is the most popular salsa venue. Tel: (7) 2040447. Most nights end at El Gato Tuerto (The Blind Cat), a good piano bar. Tel: (7) 552696. The Cabaret Tropicana is a bit touristy but worth seeing. Tel: (7) 552696.
