Where do you enjoying travelling the most? What is it that attracts you to a particular city or country?
As a traveller and photographer, I like to travel to places where I can experience the colours, flavours, smells and sounds of a culture. In the Far East, I like to travel to India, some areas of China, the Indochinese Peninsula, Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In the Middle East I enjoy visiting Yemen, Iraq and Syria. I like to be able to see thousands of years of history in the faces, architecture, music and cuisines of the places I visit. For example, when I visit Peru or Cambodia, I am surrounded by the layers of some 2000 years of history. As a documentary maker, I have the chance to immortalise all these things.
What are your favourite places to visit?
You must visit Agra, Varanasi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jeselmer in India; Angkor in Cambodia; Machu Picchu, Cuzco and Puno in Peru; Xinjiang in China; Shibam, Wadi Hadramaut, in Yemen; Guatemala-Antigua in Guatemala and Bamyan, Gazni in Afghanistan. Of course, there are also important destinations in Europe. In addition to Paris, the cities of Rome, Florence, Sevilla and Cordoba offer tremendous history and culture.
What are your favourite restaurants and which dishes would you recommend from the menu?
Since I don't go on traditional tours, I tend to enjoy restaurants that are frequented by the locals in the cities I listed above. If I give you their addresses, I'll end up spoiling them. However, you can find out more about the countries I have visited at my website, www.haberci.com.
Can you recommend any cultural activities or events?
In all the cities that I like to visit, I enjoy rituals that take place according the phases of the moon or solar calendars rather than touristic events. You can find out more about these events by doing a little research.
