Hello fellow fans of the open sea!
This month I have two wonderful pieces of news to share with you!
The first is that a new Mediterranean monk seal has been discovered! One of my SAD-AFAG friends spotted him near Karaburun. The seal is an adult male with rare dirty white markings on his back.
The seal is the second adult male in the Karaburun Peninsula. He seems to be in good physical condition. A vote will be held among SAD-AFAG members and adoptive seal parents to decide what to name the new monk seal. As you know, I was named by my parents at The Gate.
My second piece of good news is about a new SAD-AFAG project. I have told you before about the close relationship between the SAD-AFAG and the MOm or Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal. Now, the two groups are going to share information and experience gained in Foca (which was selected to be a pilot protected zone in 1992) and the National Marine Park of Alonissos in the Northern Sporades, also established in 1992.
Within this framework, Turkish and Greek fishermen will come together for the first time to discuss the impact of the efforts to protect the monk seal on their fishing activity. As a result, the Foça Water Resources Association and the Alonissos Fishermen's Association will be working hand in hand.
Don't forget to wave at me when you're swimming by!
