Letter 8: Home sweet home

"As I head home at night, there isn't a single star in the sky. The road seems longer than on the way out. I found little food today. I am starving and exhausted. Half an hour later, I find myself by a small island. Finally, I discover a small cave. However, I can't get inside. The whole cave is full of something sticky. Figuring something is wrong, I get out of there pretty quickly. Once I see the lights on the shore, I relax a little, but I am still tired."

Ahmet's phone rings early in the morning. It is the gendarme. A small Mediterranean seal has been found on the shore covered in a black substance. Having surrounded the seal, they immediately called Ahmet. Ahmet dresses quickly and rings Yalçın in Foça and Hasan at the Erdemli Marine Sciences Institute. Hasan also rushes out, hoping to reach the seal before dawn. When Ahmet finds the seal, it seems to be covered in a petrol-like substance. The seal must have passed through an oil slick. Suddenly, Ahmet realises that the seal is none other than our Sleepyhead.

"I woke up under the hot sun covered in this sticky stuff. When I unstuck my eyes, I saw that I was surrounded by barbed wire. I couldn?t get back to the sea! A man behind me was holding something sharp in his hand. At first, I panicked, then, whatever he did made me go to sleep. Were they going to hurt me?"
"This shot will put him to sleep for half an hour," said Hasan. Under the oil, the seal was healthy.
They cleaned his eyes, nose and body. 45 minutes later he woke up.

"When I woke up, the sticky stuff and the barbed wire was gone. But the people were still there. Did they help me? Maybe some people are good. I thanked them and swam back into the sea, my home."
Pollution affects all living creatures. The sea is their home. We must keep it clean.
