| A meeting to discuss the protected marine zones in Foça, Turkey and Alonnisos, Greece. |
Our monthly letter from Sleepyhead, The Gate's Mediterranean monk seal adopted via the SAD-AFAG (Underwater Research Society-Mediterranean Seal Research Group):
Hello my friends!
I have some wonderful news for you! The SAD-AFAG and the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (MOm) are joining forces to share valuable information and experience. The first technical visit was held from July 24-31. My friends at the SAD-AFAG plus representatives from the Foça Water Resources Association and the Authority for the Specially Protected Areas conducted studies in the National Marine Park of Alonissos in the Northern Sporades. In addition, Turkish and Greek fishermen came together for the first time to discuss the impact of the efforts to protect the monk seal on their fishing activity. The second technical visit will be held from September 2-8. This time, my friends at MOm will come to Turkey to visit the Foca protected marine zone. Their visit will coincide with the "Godspeed, Fisherman and Marine Documentaries Festival". The Delegation of the EC to Turkey / Civil Society Development Program-Micro Project Program for Turkish-Greek Civic Dialog provides financial support for the project.
This month also sees the 4th "Godspeed, Fisherman and Marine Documentaries Festival" held from September 2-5 in Foça. This important platform will begin with a lively opening concert followed by documentaries from around the world. You can also learn how to repair fishing nets, bait fishing rods and catch fish. Plus, you can take part in boat races! I hope to see you in Foça from September 2-5!
